2016 Signature Series Viognier
Straw colored with a brilliant clarity, this Signature Viognier is a small batch wine that can be laid down for a few years. The nose is initially a bit shy, but opens up quickly to reaveal floral tones, honeysuckle and classic Viognier yellow fruit aromas. The palate is quite light, showcasing a more acidic style than what Viognier is known for. Well balanced and elegant, this is a wine where all components work together and are seamlessly interwoven, with oak creating a fresh and lengthy structure.
The fruit for the Signature Viognier was hand-picked and comes from the eastern vineyard block, planted in Nason Series Loam. After pressing, the juice was transferred to tank where primary fermentation completed after 3 weeks. The wine was then transferred to 100% French Oak barrels, 55% New, 45% Neutral where it aged on the fine lees for 9 months.
Bearing the signature of owner Al Schornberg, the Signature Series wines are an exclusive selection denoting some of the highest craftsmanship of our winemaker Stephen Barnard. The label orginated in 2009 when Stephen Barnard was getting ready to be wed to Al Schornberg's daughter Kathryn. In preparation for the ceremony, Al personally re-oriented the viognier vines in front of Edgewood Estate, for aesthetic reasons, against the winemaker's wishes. Unbeknownst to Al, Stephen kept the harvest from those vines separate and in the finest french oak barrels. Later, Stephen surreptitiously aquired Al Schornberg signature on a napkin and with the help of Al's other daughter Kris, the Signature Series label was born. The label is now a promise to represent the finest possible expression of a single varietal that Keswick Vineyards can produce and typically consisting of a single barrel or two of production.
