The fruit for this wine comes from the vineyard in front of the house and was hand harvest September 11th at a sugar level of 20.5 Brix. The fruit was de-stemmed and allowed to remain on the skins for 2 hours, before being transferred to the press. Pressing was gentle with only the free run and light press fractions used. The juice was run to tank and after a sulfur addition, was allowed to settle naturally for 2 days.
The cleaner juice was racked off the settled solids and further additions of tartaric acid and Opti-white [yeast derived nutrient] was made. The juice was inoculated with yeast GRE, with primary fermentation finishing in 12 days. Fermentation was allowed to commence at warmer than normal temperature, this was done to blow off some of the fruit esters and amplify more of the terroir driven character.
After fermentation the wine was cooled and sulfured to prevent the onset of malo-lactic fermentation, wanting to preserve the malic acid in the wine. The wine was stored on fine lees for 7 months with little stirring of the lees during that period.
Prior to bottling the wine was both cold and protein stabilized, before being sterile filtered and sulfur adjusted to 28.8 ppm free.
419 cases produced.
Strikingly Rose Gold in color, with no sign of gas or flocculation. This wine has amplified aromas of freshly cut red berries, citrus fruit and a hint of green apple. The palate is light and vibrant with lovely acidity, good palate weight and length. Flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberries are dominant before warmth shows a touch more of the citrus tones and slight spiciness on the finish.
Provencal in style, this Rose is approachable but may also be laid down for 1-3 years for additional complexity.
Pair with oysters on the half shell, ceviche or simple salads.
Les Vents d'Anges (L.V.A.), "the wind of angels" is a tribute to Genevieve de Beaubien, M.D., the beloved sister of Al Schornberg, owner of Keswick Vineyards. Pronounced the same as vendanges or "harvest", the label is a French play on words named by the matriarch of the Schornberg family, André. The wines bottled under this label are typically young wines made to be enjoyed in the moment and are very fruit forward and light in body.
